Engine shudder starting, loss of power

Recommended Posts

G'day all was just wondering if anyone could help explain why my 02 3LTD had a shudder when starting and even though was running fine now I have loos of power, 3rd gear flat to the floor and it's a slug. My egt gauge is sitting pretty high aswell when just accelerating through the gears up around 4 I back before it gets to 5.

I'm gonna clean the maf sensor today and probably replace it if there's no change, any help or advice would be great cheers, newbie westy

G`day, welcome to the forum.

Technically, start up shudder is not or it shouldn't be caused by MAF sensor.

You could try disconnecting it and than try to start.

If you have access to multimeter you could measure MAF outputs at idle voltage should be around 1.7 to 2.0 V.

Even better would be access to ECU Talk cable/interface and software, with that you can log engine sensors values to see what is happening.

What you also could quickly check if the turbo charger VNT arm goes up/raises when engine starts and goes down when engine is off. Thast would elliminate vacuum control as source of trouble. Like vacuum leak or VNT control solenoid issue.

To me, this could also be like classic fuel starvation. Check or replace fuel filter as needed.

I'm guessing that if you have EGT gauge you have boost gasuge as well. So boost pressure would also be indicating lower values.

There is also a possibility that EGR valve is stuck open perhaps partially this ofcourse only if you haven't blocked already.

Cheers

Well I have replaced maf sensor as I have just purchased this patrol, took it for a lap and still lagging (mainly 2nd and 3rd gear foot flat just doesn't wanna get up and go) boost gets just over 5psi and egt still getting high quick (wants to go to 5 just cruising in 4th gear)

HELP :/

Please check the turbo actuator first, it should lift up fully and not fluctuate while the engine is idling.

02 Patrols have vacuum canister mounted next to intercooler and they like to leak so badly that there isn't enough vacuum generated to actuate turbo vanes.

You can temporarily bypass it if needed when you see no movement in the actuator.

Cheers

You need to check if it is vacuum leak or control solenoid going silly.

This is a process of ellimination.

You can connect vacuum line directly to actuator to see what will happen.

Line with what looks like a little filter is the direct line from vacuum pump.

Cheers
