The Flywheel on my 2008 CRD seems to be groaning at certain RPM under load (vibration-noise). Everything has to get pretty hot before the issue becomes obvious.

I will have to change the flywheel and the clutch at some time in the future and i wondered if anyone had fitted a single (solid) mass flywheel instead of the standard dual mass flywheel. I believe there are some trade offs. Do the benefits outway the negatives?

Would anyone recomend fitting the solid flywheel?

I'd fit solid flywheel and HD clutch instead of DMF and Nissan's excuse for a clutch right away.

The benefits far outweigh the negatives but again it depends on how fussy you are.

 

The main benefits/reasons for DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) are:

Reduced vibration in the motor and the driveline

Torque/shock loads dampening on the transmission (less attention on clutch engagement habits)

 

all these are excuse for cheap lousy engineering and shortcuts to save money at the expense of the customers.

 

The main negatives reasons for DMF are:

Expensive

Weak

Limited service life

Unreliable

 

Solid flywheel conversions

 

Negatives:

Vibrations at low RPM under load

Harsh torque/shock load on the driveline (more attention on clutch engagement)

 

Positives:

 

Cheaper,

Long term service life

Simplicity

Reliable

Repairable

Yup I changed mine to SMF too. Have had no complaints.

Mine is single too. Definatly notice low rpm vibrations, but all that means is that you should probably be shifting down a gear anyway!

My Di is SMF. My CRD will be when it needs replacing.
