  3. Hasnt happened again so far, but I havent tried starting it at 4AM on a freezing morning, Thenew starter I orsered is "Starter Motor For Nissan Patrol GQ GU TD42 TD45 TD48 DIESEL (HEAVY DUTY 3.2KW" so might throw that one in, as this one is a bit lazy in cranking, will pull it appart and clean it all up and keep as a spare for when I eventually do a cape york trip.....
  4. Early this morning I tried starting my 4.2 and there was no cranking, no clicking no nothing, as I was taking my wife to the hospital I managed to clutch start it, after driving for about 30-40 mins I parked it on a slope and tried to start with the key and it started fine. The battery was fully charged as headlights and all other electrics worked fine. I've ordered a cheap one on ebay to install until I get the origional one sorted, any suggestions etc appriecated Thanks in advance
  5. I purchase a 2000 GU ST yesterday and didnt get around to testing every light etc until today, when I engage either hi4 or low4 the light on the dash doesnt come on, I have asked the people I bought it from if they knew if it was working or not. They said last time they went off road about 5 months ago it was, but when they did a heart transplant about 2 years ago they experienced what I am now. He said they took it to their mechanic and he really didnt touch anything and it started working, the mechanic said it must have been a loose connection or something, as they and their mechanic are a 5 hour drive from where I live I'm hoping some people on here amy be able to shed some light on what could be the cause and were to start looking. I've ordered a workshop manual for it so when it arrives will be able to get the multi meter out then. is there a possible fuse? Thanks in advance
  6. GU converting auto hubs to manualWill the manual hubs from my old GQ fit as a replacement to the auto hubs on a series 2 GU?Thanks in advance
  7. Will a bullbar from a GQ fit a series 1 GU? What other parts are interchangable? The GQ is an 89 TB42s the gu is a series 1 but was origionally a 3Ltr and has been converted to a 4.2TD with an silvertop turbo motor from a GQ but is still running all the 3ltr running gear. Thank in advance
  8. Surely cant be as bad as my 89 GQ carbie, auto.....
  9. If read on some forums there is 2 mods to do, one in the engine bay and one soldering 2 wires together in the drivers kick panel, and people are getting 14-15 instead of the 17,18+
  10. Still doing my home work, but some are pointing me towards a gu 4.8 if I want reliability and creature comforts.? What do you guys recon?
  11. Can people give me real world fuel economies they get from their 4.8's Driving around town Driving on highway driving off road in bush Driving off road in sand..
  12. I'm Upgrading from my GQ getting old and need some creature comforts, are there any stories or concerns with taking a GU with Auto transmission up to the CAPE, doing water crossings etc? any risk of getting water down the dipstick? Any advise or suggestions appreicated
  13. Can you give me more information about this mod please.....
  14. What are the problems with regards to your statement of "auto box has its own problems ". I'm aware of the problems with the old GQ auto transmissions as I have first hand experience, but to date all I have read about the gu transmissions is the Auto is much better and improved then thatn of the old GQ auto... Any and all advise is appreicated, as I've never owned or driven a GU hence why doing as much homework as possible. Due to a medical condition my next truck has to be an Auto, with power windows etc...
  15. I was thinking of something between 2003-2006, although I like the change on the dash and console in the 2005 on.. When you do the NADS do you also take the inlet manifold off and clean out the black crap that would have built up from the EGR and the oil vapor, before doing the NADS and fitting a catch can?
  16. Can people give me some stats on the 3.0 engines, as to where they in a manual or automatic transmission Vehicle. I'm doing as much homework as possible before I run out and buy one. Cheers
  17. A guy I was talking to about changing from a wagon to a UTE told me that there is a jump in registration fees, Can anyone confirm this? cheers
  18. can anyone tell me where to get my factory Diff locker repaired in Brisbane. Prior to upgrading from the factory solinoid, it was locking and staying locked after sitting for a few days, some times it would disengage when starting the car, but on a few occassions it wouldnt unlock until after driving several hundred meters and would disenage with a bang/clang. Hind sight is 20/20 I should have stopped and swapped the vacuum hoses around, but when I got around to upgrading from the factory solinoids to an MAC, I got two 4wd trips in after the upgrade before another loud bang/clang. now when I turn the diff locker on it sometimes locks but more often I hear the sound of the teeth clanging trying to lock and stay locked, I've seen and read on these forums about people who have taken out the "dog gear" and taken it to places to be welded up etc. I'm no able to take the "dog gear" out my self. and after having declined a couple of invitations to go 4wding am keen to get the diff locker fixed, so any suggestions on where to take it to in Brisbane or Ipswich surrounds in Qld would be appreicated...
  19. What tweaks are you suggesting?
  20. Can some one tell me what the difference is between the different GU's DX compared to ST compared to ST PLUS compared to ST-L etc What features do the include/exclude on the different models? Cheers
  21. What about the lock up solinoid, I've heard people having heaps of greif with their GQ's locking and unlocking, not locking at all and other wierd issues. is the Auto in the GU Problem free compared to the GQ?
  22. Where would I get The Glow plugs timer? 6. Fuel lift pump and spill line return (to save injection pump)? 8. If automatic transmission: line pressure solenoid resistor and lock up clutch mod. Is this like the torque converter lock up switch I currently have in my GQ?
  23. My current GQ is going to need some $$$$ spent on it within the next couple of years. Plus the Auto is playing up. Due to medical reasons I need an Auto but could drive a manual if I REALLY had to, Other creature comforts such as electric windows would be of benefit for my deteriorating medical condition, Fuel economy ids a big thing also, The thought of getting anything under 20/100 K is very appealing. I've looked up today a couple of GU 4.2 diesels but again coming back to my medical condition, the need of an auto transmission is very high... thanks for your input and advice/suggestions, I'm taking everything on board, so when I do have the 15K in my hand I can make an overly educated decision no matter which way I go...
  24. Where can I download or buy ECU Talk software from?
