  1. Ray, have I missed something? Someone raises this topic many times in here? You are the only one bringing it up, be it a news flash how great Windows 8 is going to be and how bad anything else is to what the statistics about operating systems are...... and how good people should feel knowing that they've chosen the winning side if there is a one. About 3/4 some of your musing about Linux are dedicated to point out how badly Linux runs Windows software. Also you like to point that if someone spend decade learning/navigating through MS® and its software they're going to have steep learnig curve doing it in Linux. once again .... maybe you need to reread this --> http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm aka infamous "Linux is not Windows" article, yes it is patronizing and possibly rude but probably born from the frustrations and facts. I fully agree with you there but once again you are failing to distinguish between the operating system and the application software. No one is cherry picking, nothing is easy when you don't know how be it driving a boat, using a sewing machine or read a book in Arabic or hurtling down the slope on skis. Neither Linux nor Apple or MS are easy when faced for the first time or when troubles hit. Isn't this the same as some suggest everytime someone else has a problem with ZD30 to install TD42 (to keep up with the ongoing theme of this forum) Here is a thing, I've been using this GNU/Linux for a long time, I hardly ever felt the need to sign up nor to post a question to any Linux forums and I had my share of frustrations and moments with it. I'm happy to use whatever gets the job I need to do done. I don't need nor I feel the need to spruik features or benefits of either computing platform or operating system. Nor do I feel the need to put the other systems down. Neither system is perfect, neither system caters for everyones needs comprehensively and this mess is partly lies at the behaviour of certain software company from Redmond and soon we will have the same situation with the another. Cheers
  2. Ray you really must be well and truly bored, also no one seems to be biting so I'll try a bit..... I'd like to point out that it is really not Linux fault for not being able to accomodate Windows software, that is a little bit rich surely even a zealot like you must agree. Does MS® runs freely Apple or Android or BeOS software executables? I don't think so. So complaining that Windows only GPS software doesn't work is like complaining that Diesel engine doesn't run on Petrol or latest BMW petrol unit is not capable running on apple cider. Or even better why Toyo's engine oil filter doesn't fit Nissan's engine. (to keep up with a theme of automotive forum in here) In case of the said GPS hardware/software you are forgetting fundamental difference about how GPS on Linux is implemented/ works. So while you are trying to sound objective and well heeled on the topic the sad part is that in this case you are showing severe lack of understanding how things work under hood in Linux. So where under Windows GPS application expects the direct access to serial port to find the GPS unit and its data, under Linux it is very different , there are two pieces required: server and client, I guess thats how most thing work under Linux. So the server takes care of the GPS unit and the protocols/data and than listens on network port for applications (client) to request data from the GPS unit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gpsd (No wonder Windows application like OzieExplorer can't find any NMEA output at serial port because it is simply not allowed access to serial ports willy nilly.) This approach allows multiple applications to access GPS data concurently unlike the MS® platform approach when only one application can have an access. Multitask dude. Cheers
  3. Well I was wondering what to do other day when I read an advice (not to me) and it is being clearly misleading/misrepresenting or plainly wrong. Do I object/attempt to correct/challenge or question the advice given or just think "what a toser" and move on. I was challenging such advice on another forum and got yelled at, the offending advice was even thanked for while my reasoning was rubbished. Worst thing is that the advice in question came from one of the forum sponsors( a new member as well), I decided to look at what they offer and it got my blood pressure up even further as these people are ripping off the ideas of others and passing them as their own and getting it perhaps wrong possibly dodgy as well. What to do, when clearly these people are taking advantage of less savvy individuals. I'd guess each to their own. Cheers
  4. Well, indeed I didn't know I could engage 4WD mode at 80 km/h if I had my hubs locked in manually. Can someone try it for me ..... I'm not that brave. I love these "infommercials". Cheers
  5. 1998 GU 2.8 L is suppose to have 4.6 but stock ratios on other (and later) unit were 3.5 3.9, 4.1, 4.3. Cheers
  6. More information on this --> funny in a sense actually http://arstechnica.c...-cloud-service/ and looks like Cisco is now back pedaling faster than Tour de France winners ---> http://arstechnica.c...router-setting/ How low will these corporate ass holes go is unbelievable. Cheers
  7. Where did you get the new plugs from and what coins $. Are they metal tips? Cheers
  8. Make sure you have "Neverseez" paste ready to apply to the threads on the new plugs before fitment if they're not coated with anything. I'm sure seeing pics of glow plugs before they do have threaded section on them so they are screwed in to the head. Cheers
  9. I'm so sorry Ray you felt a bit emotional, like I've burst your bubble or something but your anecdotal evidence is perhaps same as mine "everyone knows" sweeping statement. Evidence of my statement is/could be in the cars we drive because if they were designed and built to more than bare minimum than we wouldn't need to mod make changes/improve our cars would we! Like the closed crankcase ventilation debacle. Like endless warped disc on Commodores before they increased their thickness, like the auto trans cooler lines with not one but two hose clamps before being forced to make proper crimped hose/pipes assemblies and recall entire production of said units. This list goes on. My "sweeping statements" comes from daily dealings with this "bare minimum" design crap, so I'd love to tell more but I'm being muzzled by NDA. Anyway back on the topic.......Also I have seen how a bull bar designed in conjunction with aerodynamics and manufacturer input looks like. Just one off as the cost of producing it outweighs the economics being able to sell it. While geeyoutoo's and Isha's tests are very interesting in regards to airflow directly over bonnet the fundamental questions remain, how effective is the airflow through the scoop and what effects of its shape makes on overall engine performance? Unfortunately there is just too much effort to solve/attempt to answer those properly I suppose. Kudos to above individuals for tackling the issue. I'm sure a few of us are watching with interest. I wish I had a time and resources to take a closer look....... Cheers PS: That link seems to be over a year old so did it actually start or was it just the intent and got nowhere.
  10. Yeah, its a shame the Patrol temp gauge is so useless. That was one of the reasons for ECU talk purchase. Cheers
  11. Ray, do you have the info that Nissan has designed the bull bar and contracted the manufacturing of it to ARB on good authority or have a proof? TBH I found incredibly hard to believe. Knowing a little about how various manufacturer implement local changes or and content on the vehicles my take would be that if anything Nissan Australia specified visual/esthetic profile of it and than let ARB handle the rest. So NO wind tunnel testing in Japan or even here at Monash Uni. Chances are that existing rules/regulations standards were applied and just the visual changes made to distinguish the bar from other b/bars on the market. Its all about branding. Nissan Japan was unlikely involved and indeed why would they even bother for such small/single market like Australia. Standard scoop is probably enough to be bare minimum as I'm sure by now everyone knows that makers of mass produced cars don't built them to any higher standard than bare minimum to be sold. Perhaps niche/specialist makers do but that's it. Just have a look at the latest Toyo Hilux scoop. It has been enlarged(widened) somewhat but it is evident its only purpose was just cosmetic as the intercooler is still the same size as before (narrow) and the flimsy channel directing the flow on the intercooler is next to useless. Its blowing air on to intercooler plastic cover Cheers
  12. Glort, are you sure you are not talking about my son? Reading this makes me also wonder about today's gen and their attitudes. Cheers
  13. If you know which wire than pull it out in the other side, join it with heatshinkable joiner or solder longer piece of reasonable length wire to it than pull the whole thing back inside to where you can rejoin it all again somewhere more reachable. Hope I make sense. Cheers
  14. Ray, you have forgotten this little gem about your favorite GPS software on Linux : <snip> "Southern Hemisphere users The day/night auto changing layouts will be "reversed" for you. Please change the daylayout to nightlayout and vice versa. " <snip> Cheers
  15. Ray, Navit works for me, I don't really care if Alpha or Omega version. I also don't care about TCO for corps and this is also major FUD. You need to look in to overall picture why corps use MS product on the frontline and why they use something else in the "engine room". Many independent surveys also confirm "global warning", yet we still argue about it. I'm beginning to think that Ray has a part time job as MS® product salesman. And for the record: Where did I mention that Linux is a better system and that "point and click" crowd are idiots? Nowhere so please leave the FUD I know you are bored ..... Cheers
  16. Double post
  17. I'm not quite sure on TD42, even on my ZD30 the view is not that great as far as I'm concerned. On mine it is Battery Voltage, Coolant temp, (these two are probably most important to me) Engine RPM, Vehicle speed (VSP), Boost pressure (I've got external gauge anyway) Atmospheric pressure (barometer) AFM ratio, Injection pump timing, Turbo actuator position, Throttle pedal position. The inability to support fuel consumption monitoring is a disappointment, distance and time trip meter is ok but rarely used by me. Reading faults and clear them perhaps is another advantage. I also found it a little odd that all sensor are locked by firmware that is what is displayed for example, there are lot more sensors on ZD30 to see on the software client of ECU Talk than on the unit I would prefer to see fuel temp sensor than for me useless turbo actuator position (I have a manual control of it.) Cheers
  18. Not really looking for them, but some in my household insist on using the Windoze and my perfectly good Epson printer for example doesn't like W7 drivers provided by the maker. Linux on other hand just works ™, go figure. When Vista/W7 debacle occured I had to throw away perfectly good scanner because you've guess it no drivers and I suppose thats why there is 15% out there....... As far as GPS programs are concerned Navit works for me just fine, except it is not as easy to configure for "point and click" crowd. I can only wonder what would state of Linux software (I'm not talking about OS) be like if just 10% of resources by software companies were put in to creating such thing. This is the problem with monopoly, interestingly MS itself is going to find hard way to survive competing against what it created. I have a feeling that W7 is the very thing which is going to break the MS plans for the Windows 8. Cheers
  19. Typical, corpo bs and one can only wonder what else is behind it. Oh George you were so right back in 1948. Wait when MS jumps on the bandwagon (oops they're already have) and your new shiny W8 baby will start doing the same. Everytime I hear word cloud and computers in one sentence I'm reaching for my proverbial gun. This cloud biz is all about control,.... taking it away from us folks. Cheers

Sobering reading, What I can't get over is this cost of transfering the Volts to consumer, 51% thats more costly than the actual product. Me thinks that someone is fleecing the public big time. What I also can't get over is the fact that majority of power is used for heating/cooling and we still build those flimsy card board dwellings. Poorly insulated, with large single glazed windows etc. Woudn't that be major cause for rethink and correction first before f -ing around with solar and wind generation. Cheers

Phew, what an essay as usual Glort, struggled through it but kudos, I have to admit I'm an avid reader of your musings from time to time. Cheers
  22. That's it Ray, you converted me .... I'm going to ditch all my Linux distros costing me exactly $0.00000000 and jump on board of MS™ Windows 8 "gravy" train for $40.00-70.00 it is a bargain, what was I thinking or may be not because I suppose gotta buy a new printer, scanner, camera, or any other peripherals which I'm gonna struggle to find the Windoze drivers for...... . "......how does it feel to be on winning side like a winner you are ...." or wait I need to change my pills this ain't B Dylan song is it. Cheers
  23. I don't think you'll find anything apart from ECUtalk to suit. In any case I'd question the need for such device on TD42 anyway, this is a mechanical beast with just rudimentary Engine ECU used really only for support functions like immobilizer, glow plugs control and cold start, EGR control, fuel injection timing engine temp compensation ,A/C cut out control etc., it is not true EDC (electronic diesel control) fuel injection like ZD30 for example. Heck it still has a hand throttle and mechanically operated fuel lever for chit and giggles.. Cheers

What a toser! Isn't he the one cheating on his missus with Joolia the Ranga? Dirty man! Cheers
  25. Mine started using a bit more, averaged up from 11.7 L than 12.5 L now 13.2 L . Not sure what is going on so just think case given the tank a dose of Chemtec for the first time instead of 2 stroke oil. Cheers
