  1. Here is a better one, no need to wait an hour after disconnecting positive terminal. If not having aux battery connected, (has to be isolated) temporarily earth out the positive lead from the starter(main) battery on the chassis somewhere (there must be no connection to positive terminal on the battery whatsover anywhere, this will discharge the capacitors in ECU immediately. Do so at your own risk! I'm still not convinced about this biz with disconnecting the battery. I'm gona check if/how engine ECU is connected to direct battery feed in that case taking a relay or fuse feeding it should be sufficient if thats the case. I believe that power feed is via ignition switch (gotta check it but Nissan's wiring diagrams are such a mess to read/make sense out.) so that would make the whole thing irrelevant. Cheers
  2. Expensive way of attaching flares for sure and existing flares are made of plastic so how is magnetic force going to work there I'm not quite sure I understand. Cheers
  3. Firstly, the "cat" in ZD30 is diesel oxidation catalyst It is there to convert leftover oxygen in exhaust gases from CO and HC to CO2 and H2O. They are not used for NOx control thats a job of EGR in this case. That device is/can be a great source of problems/restrictions if it starts getting damaged/trashed it restricts the exhaust, in any case it is unwanted restriction. To knock out the internals .... environmental vandal or not, sure to free up flow of exhaust gases and consequent benefits of that are there but at increased polution levels. Aftermarket exhaust are usually fitted with less restrictive cats thus making both the EPA and the engine performance happier. Tampering with vehicle emission control system can land you in a lot of trouble. This whole thing is a grey area especially in Diesels as not all vehicles have the DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst). ZD30 was one of the cleanest Diesels around when it came out thanks to this device as well. You will find that EPA and various other gubermint bodies are going to disagree with your view too I read a "white paper" on Diesel emissions/polution in light vehicles from 2001 and there authors were advocating legislated compulsory retrofit of DOC and DPF to every light Diesel vehicle to lower the emmisions, with compulsory testing vehicle emmisions annually and forcing owners of aging poluting vehicles to have all these emmision reducing technologies fitted at their expense. That paper has not been forgotten, it is waiting to be implemented once there is a right time for it. This is huge and is coming whether we like it or not, the days of Diesel engines are numbered. It will be so expensive to operate that in the end noone in their right mind will be purchasing such vehicles. To "f" around with all these addons like SCR, EGR, DPF, DOC is gonna put such financial pressure on operating Diesel powered vehicles that it'll be simply cast aside in cars especially. Just look what Nissan is doing with the latest Y62 and up and coming Pathfinder models. Today a majority of engine failures/breakdowns on commercial vehicles are due to emmisions tech shackles, its a major disaster for the industry. Nissan has droped DPF from this year Navara STX with the Renault sourced Diesel V6 line up, I wonder why..... Here is an anecdote for you: when I visited World's second largest commercial vehicles manufacturer powertrain facility I had the chat with a few engineers about latest development in Diesel emissions tech. A truck engine with EGR, SCR, DOC and DPF will have cleaner gas/air coming out of the exhaust pipe than the air in and around NY City. It has been measured by these nutters. When I saw the size and complexity of that stuff hanging of the engine I just shook my head. Its time for electric vehicles me think. Back on the topic; I'd leave the OEM cat alone and fit aftermarket exhaust with high flow cat instead. Cheers
  4. Indeed that is my concern, how does one know then the soldering iron is hot enough to not cause the damage and I hate to rush. Really not looking forward to this...... Cheers
  5. Finally decide that it is a time to replace the OEM battery. When voltmeter on ECUTalk goes down to 6 Volts during cranking and it just makes it in this weather (20° in the morning) it is time. So $120 bucks later a new N70ZZL MF is in, surprisingly the original cooling shield also fits but the battery is slightly taller so only just being able to get craddle bracket/tie down to fit. Hopefully this one is going last like the OEM unit, somehow I don't think so.......Has anyone else noticed that after the original battery in wristwatches expires after 5-7 years the replacment one fails just after 12 months. Happy cranking time..... Cheers
  6. Hello, Anyone proficient in soldering electronic components like resistors, diodes etc on to PCBs. I found some useful kits in Jaycar shop I wanna use in Patrol, trouble is they all come unassembled and my soldering duties/skills were/are mostly automotive cables and terminals. Any pitfalls or what to watch out for? Perhaps extra pieces in the toolkit required not to stuff up or make the job easier/quicker. Cheers
  7. Glort, what an epic post, had a good giggle. Unfortunately, you can't stop progress or should we say downgress. The sheeple mentality is taking the cause.... I have no problem using me smart dumb teh phone but only for certain things however never felt a need to waste my life by updating "fastewaste" status or f-twitting nonsense or other always connected social activities. This bull chit is all about consuming something, the insatiable apetite for more, newer, better is fuelling this lunacy. The future looks bleak in this case. The human society will be reduced to shadows eventually as machine will take over. The dawn of the machines is upon us, lol I sound like a mad preacher. Take care. Cheers
  8. I'd still think that a hose is probably better in this case, it gives more flexibility in true sense of its meaning. Much better for constant vibration and shakes. Cheers
  9. Hello, Wicked machine, welcome to the forum mate Cheers
  10. You can get high pressure A/C hose, it is done all the time so any decent A/C specialist/workshop will/should have the tools, selection of hoses & fittings to make the line for you, the problem is/could be the access. The A/C hoses are secured on to a pipe or join fitting by a special crimp clamp which can handle high pressures, you are not gonna get that out of the classic hose clamps. This shouldn't be that hard to repair at worst you may need to remove the fuel tank to gain access and correct the routing of the pipes. Nothing like aftermarket accessories eh. Oh and Mr Nissan is just a thief and they probably meant raising the body and not the chassis to get the pipes out as they're fitted on assembly line in to chassis before the body goes on. Replacing broken A/C pipes with a hoses is common fix as nobody wants to dismantle half a car/truck to remove most of those pipes so a quick fix is to cut and join. Cheers
  11. There are A/C pipes runing outside to the rear unit unfortunately it is a single piece so the best what can be done is to split the pipe and crimp a hose on to it but I'm not sure if it an ally pipe in that case its gonna be harder to do.... Its a terrible design. And yes it rubs on various chassis obstacles/bracket. probably best left to trusted A/C specialist but you are right its gonna cost a bit. Cheers
  12. Hi Nigel, Welcome to the forum, Cheers
  13. I try to keep it under 500°C but that's for Di. CrD units seems to able to survive at much higher temps (around 600-700°C) but I'd considered that dangerous and not beneficial to the engine. So general consensus would be to keep it up 500° C. Play it safe. You'll be surprised how quickly the EGTs can raise to those levels. Cheers

Thats a good find for anyone not just newbies especially the lazy ones. Kallen, the link in your post has error in it so the page is not displayed, try this: campinglist instead of yours: http://www.campinglist.net/URL btw: you have the same problem in your sig. ---> [url="http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?15134-Westy-s-Accessories.-A-small-back-yard-builder."]Westy's Accessories you have too many URL bbcodes try with like this: Westy's Accessories Cheers
  15. Its empty because none bother to visit. Sometimes I actually prefer to sit in empty foyer than watch silly buggers tripping over their garbage...... Cheers
  16. What happens to those who haven't got "facewaste" account? Are we missing out? Cheers
  17. Nope it isn't, these valves don't bleed excess boost pressure they vary the vacuum rate applied to VNT actuator. Cheers
  18. Provent is the most important addition IMHO,and oil pressure gauge is nice to have for added safety. After the Scangauge perhaps consider exhaust gas temperature (EGT) gauge as another important piece in your NADS armory. Other than you should be fine until you start modding the Patrol even further, LOL. Cheers
  19. Hello, welcome to the forum. Firstly, using E*R shim will not influence MAF voltages noticeably. Secondly, it is unwise making any changes without actually been able to read/check with either gauges or a scan tool as to what effects the changes made have. I personally suspect that the boost gauge you are using is not displaying data correctly either because the the boost tube has a restriction/kink in it or it needs to be calibrated perhaps I'm not that familiar with mechanical boost gauges. Is there a significant lack of power as well? Because yours is CrD 08 model you could actually use the OBDII adapter and app if you have a smart phone for example to access the engine ECU sensors like MAF and MAP (boost sensor) instead of additional mechanical boost gauge. Or you could obtain OBDII scanner like "Scangauge" or OBD software with OBD adapter to use with a notebook for example. You've got choices there. I'd certainly not hesitate to purchase Scangauge (~$170 AUD) or at least a cheap OBDII bluetooth adapter and a smart phone app as a minimum (under $50 AUD) because it will allow you to access vital info on the engine ECU including added features like fuel consumption data, DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) readout and clearing/deleting the codes instead of going to Mr Nissan to get fleeced. The boost levels on CrD are definately higher than 5 psi however it is all relevant to the engine load and throttle pedal position. average boost is around 10-15 psi with max spike to 22 psi are not uncommon. It is uncommon to have a need for VNT stop screw adjustment on CrD ZD30 as well, they handle higher boost easily unlike the Di units. Free (without the load) reving the engine will not achieve higher boost levels maybe around 5-8 psi max from my experience with turbo Diesels. Cheers
  20. Cheers, all is good, thanks for the great service. On another note, I'm charging my aux battery as it seems unable to run a fridge for no longer than couple of hours. Its only 6 months old (the battery) so I'm hoping its just that, flat. Kinda annoying being on third aux battery and still on OEM Nissan unit.
  21. LOL, I'm watching your experiences with the tent with interest. Nothing like field experience eh. Keep us posted. Cheers
  22. Started the bloody thing after 7 weeks overseas, not without hiccups though; flat battery, looks like I need the new one...... Feels very strange driving Trol after such time especially when only driving small hatchbacks overseas. Had to think on which side of the road I needed to be too. Oh well back to work today. Cheers
  23. I have a similar problem with mine, although the chrome ring is only partially "rust blistering" on one light. The chrome rings are available from Nissan "rare parts" department for about $50 a pop when I checked about six months ago. I'm gonna clean the blisters out and than spray paint the rings either black or some similar colour, I noticed chrome paint on the shelves too perhaps I'll give that one a try.. This is much cheaper option than new rings or whole set of lights. Cheers
  24. I like the colour scheme so far..... Cheers
  25. Nope, it only works on vehicles with OBDII port which 2003 ZD30 hasn't got. Nissan implenmented the OBDII port/protocol only after being forced by law! It is mandatory on all vehicles from 2007 onwards. So in Nissan Patrol case only on CrD models. Cheers
