Nissan Patrol GU/Y61 (GU Patrol, 1999–2016)

Sixth generation in Australia, introduced in 1999 as the GU Patrol. A long-running and iconic model, with production for the Australian market ending around 2016 (though it continued elsewhere globally until 2023). Early models had a 4.5L petrol inline-six (TB45) or 2.8L turbo-diesel (RD28), later replaced by the 3.0L turbo-diesel (ZD30) and 4.8L petrol (TB48). Updates (e.g., GU Series II in 2001) refined engines and interiors. Available in wagon, cab-chassis, and ute configurations.

  1. Have read the GU reference doc on this topic and it refers to Bridgeing terminals 1 and 8 on the 16 pin diagnosis connector to access codes and clear said codes (Turning of Engine warning Liight). After trying this procedure without success i had a closer look at the diagnosis connector on my 2008 CRD and i could only see wires connected to pins 4 thru 8 on the specified row (1 ,2 and 3 not connected) I identified the right row to be the row closest to the large or tapered side of the connector as suggested in the diagram shown in the reference doc. Has anyone any experience with this as i would like to clear 'Check Engine Warning Light'. The warning light has…

  2. Started by TaffWest,

After removing steering column covers numerous times to access wiring for added guages etc i think i may have stuffed the Key reader. My screw driver slipped into key reader coil that surrounds the ignition when trying to pry out the metal ring around the ignition switch. Any way the vehicle will not start. Turns over fine but no ignition. As far as i know the key reader imobilises the ignition system somehow and has to send a signal to ECM once it is happy wth the key used to start the car. Any one know how to test the key reader itself? Tested wiring to key reader 12 volts in brown wire (igntion off) Earth continuity black wire OK (ignition off). As per manual for v…

I have just got an Ultra-gauge. Its pretty cool and shows all kinds of info, most of which I have no interest in. The reason I bought it was to reset my Check Engine Light after an EGT block. Agter fitting the gadget to my 08 CRD I had a small job starting in Charleville, SWQ and ending in Toowoomba, SEQ. A round trip of about 1200km. The CRD is overboosting but I have ordered a Dawes Valve to stop this. I am averaging about 12lph. The thing that has made me start this thread is the fact that when I over boost, the fuel consumption rockets to 16lph, Has anyone with poor fuel economy figures on a CRD tried an Ultra-gauge or a Dawes Valve?

Has anyone knocked out the cat that sits in the first section of the original exhaust? or would you?( CrD 2008 ) Are there any benefits to exhaust flow if you did? The cat is there to burn any unburnt fuel etc but i think it would offer some resitance to the exhaust flow. When i removed the first section (to weld in a 1/4 BSP socket EGT) it dawned on me that you could knock out the cat and possibly improve exhaust flow. Is it worth it or not? If all the after market large bore exhausts are fitted with a cat then i am obligated to leave it be. Would be nice to hear your thoughts Cheers

My 2003 3lt has suddenly started going into limp mode, mainly in 3rd gear, and lighting the engine light. We put it on a mates scan tool and got the error code 0095 (over boost) I have Dawes and needle valve, EGR block.Boost hits about 7psi and it limps. Sometimes I can get to 16 psi, but not often. I also have a strange squeaking noise when I shut it down sometimes. It sounds like a vacuum leak. Would that set off a limp mode? How do you find a leak on a diesel? On the way back from Brisbane last weekend, it limped home from Kilcoy (160km). At one stage I hit a bump and it seemed to take off for a while but soon limped again. This makes me wonder if I have a faulty send…

  8. Started by Bogmeister,

I have recently bought a CRD 3.0l, ( now 110000km) after reading and estimating where my clutch bites at, I will be up for a new one soon. I replaced the DMF in my Di wagon with a single mass and like the feel. The ZD30 Navara has a single mass flywheel from standard. Will it fit the Patrol? Will a second hand Navara flywheel+machining be cheaper than a new after market fly wheel? Are there any reasons not to do this?I think a Navara clutch wont last, will a Patrol one match up?

Hi guys, Anybody had any bad experiences with the seals on side of head where the injector tubes and injectors meet? I have had to take it back before and now again after they rebuilt the motor as they keep leaking. They stopped it for a couple of hundred kays and now its leaking oil down side of motor again. Any suggestions ? Dan J

  10. I'm getting the feeling that my front springs have sagged a bit, so I've hunted high and low to get the measurement of the factory suspension from centre of hub to bottom of wheel arch. Can't find it anywhere. I have a vague recollection of reading somewhere that the later GUs are slightly lower than the earlier ones. Either they've sagged, or we undercalculated the affect of the extras. Either way I want to correct the issue. Can anyone point me in the right direction or can someone with a standard - no bullbar, no dual batteries - GU7 or GU8 vehicle measure for me. Top of hub to under wheel arch would be great, or centre to wheel arch also great.

I'm looking at fitting a higher micron fuel filter and a in line lift pump, I was talking to a dealer about it and they said that the standed lift pump struggles if you put a second filter in. Knowing that Australia does not have the best fuel quality I'm trying to improve it And trying to improve my fuel ecomany along the way. any ideas?

Well yesterday I was wiring up a dual battery system in my brother's gq, needed some extra stuff so down to auto shop we go.....on way back I could hear a rattling noise. *** wait for it *** Crunch bang and grind......For.F%$k sake what now..... turns out my turbo decided it didn't like me, if its not enough that.I spent $8,000 2500 kms ago on an engine rebuild.... limped it home and Pulled intake off checked impeller and there was massive amounts of play. Good news is a have a spare one in garage that was off a low Kay zd30 that blew up and I brought. All changed and running better than it ever has, hope this turbo lasts. It was surprisingly easy to do and the …

  13. Hi Guys New to the forum but i will leave the introductions for later. I have a silver 50th Simpson anniversary GU8 and today i found out that trees don;t make for good bumper stops. I stove the corner of my bumper in. Whilst I have repaired it, it looks crappy to be honest and i was wondering if anyone has a silver Plastic bumper skin to suit a GU8 or 2010 onwards Patrol. If you do please let me know. Ta

I have done the glow plug timer mod and have received my new glow plugs - pretty keen to put them in tomorrow morning. The patrol4x4.com forum seems to be dead again (it had the guide on there) so im at a loss about the glow plug replacement procedure. Can anyone spell it out for me? Im guessing that ill just need to remove the intercooler, and maybe part of the inlet manifold to get to the plugs. Any other tips and tricks? Ive got a torque wrench so can use that to tighten up the new plugs. Thanks!!!!

  15. There is a thread on Patrol 4x4 re this that has some interesting things going on. I did this test some years ago before bonnet mounted cams. Having just replaced my bonnet protector, this new one has a more aggressive upsweep so decided to do the test again inspired by the OP (Isha) from Patrol 4x4 thread, now I have a Contour HD cam, so I can document it. The test was done at 40-60-80k with a slight hold at each speed. I have always mounted the wool in the opposite direction for these tests so the effect is a little more evident. The flow into the airscoop is quite good, there is no evidence of back pressure which would cause the wool strands directly in the mouth…

from new my 2010 GUDX was a pain with the cruise control! It would work great or would set but not work. I tried all things possible (other than applying the brakes) swithch off cruise, swith off engine re start engine, re set cruise all to no avail seemed to have a mind of it's own. Then I saw on a different thread THE ANSWER = *YOU MUST APPLY THE BRAKES TO ALLOW CRUISE TO OPERATE*, no more problems every time the cruise won't work I touch the brakes and like magic the cruise works, seems a little man in the engine ECU is verry worried that the brakes might not work, so you can't set cruise untill you have tested them, Regards Joe seems he is then happy (dosent pro…

Hi all, does anyone have a thought to what might cause a low idle rpm, its a 03 zd30 auto and it idles at only 400 rpm , also when you select a gear on flat ground it won't idle forward or back , drives well no other issues, could this be related to timing? Any thoughts? Cheers.

So.. I think my clutch is on its last legs.. Very high on the pedal. And it may be my imagination, but I think I have felt it slip a couple of times. Only by a hundred or so RPM... I think.. It seems lower on the pedal when in high or low range, dont understand that.. but true.. Thus.. What is the best course of action? Stay dual mass? Go solid mass conversion? Anyone have any thoughts on the best/best value brands? Any input would be appreciated.

Adjusting the VNT initially sounds very daunting, when actually it is quite simple. A little care and forthought makes it light going. Usually 1/2 a turn down on the grub screw is enough to put you in the right spool up rate following an EGR block/exhaust upgrade etc. Generally we are looking for a spoolup rate of 5-6psi @ 1500 and 10-12psi @ 2000, this is just a guide not a hard and fast rule. Excess spoolup can result in long term damage to the turbo from cavitation and turbo shock. Hope this helps people trying it for the first time. Tools required: 10mm combination ring open end spanner preferably with a slight offset angle, a 2.5mm allen key, a pair of long nose p…
