  1. Hi there, 15 psi max boost is safe limit even at 2000 RPM under fair load. Limps usually occur if your boost hits 18 psi under 3000 RPM so staying within 17 psi envelope will keep limps away. Also Dawes valve weaker spring will have tendency to do boost bounce so your peak boost will temporarily raise higher. I recommend to contact 3Barrracing and obtaining the stronger spring they're now selling for Patrols. That one will reduce the bounce but thread carefully as it brings higher boost more rapidly so be careful with the setting it up. Cheers
  2. Well, technically you can use those gauges but for example the boost gauge is not for diesel engines but for petrol unit. Diesel engines don't need to have vacuum boost display (no throttle buterfly flap). .... I'm also concerned about the level of illumination these gauges produce especially at night. Personally I'm also not fan of analog (needle and scale) gauges as they're too hard to keep a tab on especially boost gauge. It is a matter of personal preference though so whatever takes your fancy. Cheers
  3. Mine has that stuff in roof gutters too and it is 05 model. With CrD ZD30 you should be reasonably OK, some have is excessive fuel consumption (16-18 L per 100 km) but it is a lottery to find which one. Nissan of course blames everything aftermarket so if you have roof rack, bull bar, snorkel, 2" lift etc not their fault. Cheers
  4. G'day, mate, Welcome to the forum, a bit quiet at times but it is up to us I suppose. Enjoy. Cheers
  5. Crossing Jardine river without ferry I guess you gonna see everything you'll need to see if you make it across. Good luck and enjoy the trip, don't forget to tell us all about it. This trip is on my bucket list, just need to find someone to do it with me. Cheers
  6. Here you go fella.... There is a row of screws (just behind the bonnet seal or where bonnet would seal/sit when closed) and couple plastic clips at the each end of the cowl. Cheers

  8. Patrol's front end wobbles are legendary. Usual culprits are the rims and tyres but there are other sources like worn out panhard rod bushes, loose radius arms/bushes, king pins bushes/bearing. It is crucial that rims/tyres are balanced properly and care is taken when they're refitted. I have the wobble around 90 km/h but only if/when I rotate wheels around and particular wheel gets fitted to frond end. It is better to visit trucks wheel alignment specialist than the car one (usually a tyre shop) as well. One of the major problem is also the built in one that is the king pin inclination angles and caster angles. There are some specialist which offer assistance in regards to king pin angles and some punters swear by the fix. I'm not so sure. One particular problem which can expose the issue with wobbles is also the 2° road inclinations we have in Oz and no other places have (EU, Japan, US) so solid axles vehicles have major problem with steering straight and keeping from being pulled to the left which puts additional stresses on king pins and steering componentry Truck suspension specialists are well aware of the issue and some have extreme solutions which make you think twice. Like offset king pin bushes, cold bending of axles (trucks) etc. Make sure your wheels tyres are balanced properly first than swap them around to see if the wobble effect changes.... As far as I'm concerned the wobbles are mainly induced by wheels/tyres first. If you had the wheel bearings checked and correctly set than apart from being flogged out there is nothing else there to cause wobbles. Grating noise could also be coming from brakes/calipers/rotors. Cheers
  9. Is there a way for you to measure the alternator voltage output? Also, I'd check alternator ground/earth. Another check would be to run headlights and see if the fuse blows than. Otherwise you'll need to check what else is connected to that fuse. Cheers
  10. Measured the length of the Patrol, need to go on a ferry to KI and they want to know if it is standard car of 5 meters. Well it is without the the spare wheel hangin' off the rear door. otherwise it is 5.2 m. Cheers
  11. Hi Geoff, Welcome to the forum, hopefully you are enjoying your new pride and joy. It will be interesting to hear your comparison between the old girl and the new. Cheers
  12. Hi there, welcome to the forum. Makes yourself at home and feel free to share your stories. Cheers
  13. Replaced dodgy IC temp switch Added another earth lead/strap between chassis and body, one can never have enough earth straps on Patrol, LOL.
  14. Thats standard Dawes valve bounce but if it is just droping and settling at said pressure thats fine, you could benefit from heavier spring but only if the boost bounce is all over the place otherwise it is gonna do the same. I have dual Dawes valves setup, one with heavier and one with standard spring. Both behave the same. When they unload boost drops about 2-3 psi and keeps steady at lower pressure afterwards unless change is made via accelerator pedal. Its probably more visible on analog needle gauge where you can see needle oscillating. I have digital (numeric) gauge so it ain't concerning me as much. So unless it is jumping back and forth constantly otherwise that's normal behaviour. Needle valve will only influence spool up rate so you could try slowing a little to see if the effect of bounce can be mitigated this way. Cheers
  15. Hi there, Heavier spring is definately better but for different reason; it will cause it to unload at higher pressure and reduce Dawes valve bounce but if I understand your question that is not what you are after. I think you misunderstanding, you have to wind the Dawes valve off (more thread showing) to get it unload bleed off at lower pressure. Stretching the spring also causes it to gain extra psi upwards. So to clarify if yours is boosting to 23 psi than you have to wind the Dawes back/out not in. You can get the heavier spring from 3Barrracing the makers of the Dawes valve too. Cheers Cheers
  16. Maybe you should, but hey now you can shoot things too. Anyway, have a fun with Patrol. Cheers
  17. Hi Dave, welcome aboard. Makes yourself at home and feel free to share your adventures and stories. It is good you are mechanically minded as Patrols can be expensive to look after if you have to pay someone else to do it. Enjoy Cheers
  18. TD42 for GU is factory turbocharged so I guess it comes with the strength built for it. Based on that guess than its GU engine however that one comes with added shackles like EGR, electronics etc. I'm not sure but are you looking at turbocharging the GQ engine after rebuilt or not option or just rebuilding with turbo pistons? Getting GU long motor and everything else from GQ fits than I suppose that way you could go but to add turbo and pump to that block will add another 5 grand easily especially once you start chasing performce as well. Stock TD42 aren'r exactly renowned for power output turbo or not. Anyway if you got money for it than go GU long motor its probably better. Cheers
  19. Well it all depends on your vallet but if I'm correct GU version of TD42 has some electronic control over mechanical pump unlike the GQ unit which is mechanical everything. So you would need also need the ECU and possibly figure out how to disable immobilizer which is a part of that pump (GU). Personally I'd rebuilt the current engine unless the GU donor engine is incredible cheap to obtain which I sincerely doubt as those engines are primary target for disgruntled ZD30 owners whose "grenade" exploded so possibly cost a pretty coin to get. Anyway here I'm shooting of my hip as these are only rumours I read on the internet. My 2 cents... Cheers
  20. Hi there, welcome to the forum. Feel free to share your adventures, experiences alike. Cheers
  21. Hello, Brett, Welcome to the forum. All the best in New year and enjoy the Patrol bug.... Cheers
  22. Hi, welcome to the forum. Its about time we've got Y60 2.8 L guru in here. Feel free to share your adventures, tribulations and happiness of owning a Patrol. Cheers
  23. Replaced intercooler fan, hopefully this one will last....bloody aftermarket people, nothing ever fits...
  24. Sorry, can help you much with petrol engines but the pinging would suggest that either the timing is not working correctly or you are using low octane fuel. Which year is your? If you try premium unleaded (98 Oct) will the pinging stop? You could also try adding something like octane booster in to the tank to see if that makes any difference. Cheers
  25. All the best everyone. Have a safe holiday... Cheers
